RISK ASSESSMENT

Security situation in Belgium

Belgium is a stable democratic country with a long history of peaceful governance. While political fragmentation, public dissatisfaction, and rising right-wing nationalism, highlighted in the 2024 federal elections, present internal challenges, overall stability remains strong.

Security risks are generally low. Belgium is not involved in active conflicts and maintains a diplomatic foreign policy. Terrorism remains a low but persistent risk due to the country’s international profile, particularly in Brussels, though security measures are robust. Public protests and strikes are common and mostly peaceful, with occasional localized disruption.

Crime levels are low, though petty crime and isolated drug-related or racially motivated incidents occur in major cities. Natural and environmental risks are limited, with flooding and heatwaves the main concerns. Healthcare, transport, and infrastructure are of very high quality, making Belgium a safe and reliable destination for travelers.

BY RISK CATEGORIES, LOW TO HIGH:
