WAR IN THE MIDDLE EAST

Middle East: rapidly changing security situation and major travel disruption

The security situation across the Middle East is currently highly volatile. Renewed hostilities involving Iran, the United States and regional allies have increased the risk of missile and drone attacks, including against military installations, critical infrastructure and locations associated with the US or Israel. Recent incidents and warnings have affected countries beyond the immediate conflict zones, including Jordan, Bahrain, Kuwait and parts of the Gulf. (Reuters)

Iran, Iraq and Lebanon remain particularly high-risk environments, while official advice warns against all travel to Iran. Other destinations that normally receive large numbers of business and leisure travelers—including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Jordan—remain accessible in many areas, but conditions can change at very short notice. (EASA)

For travelers, the most immediate consequence is disruption to aviation. Airlines are cancelling, rerouting or postponing flights, while airspace can close with little warning. EASA has issued or extended warnings covering several parts of the region because military activity and active air-defense systems create risks for civilian aircraft. Even passengers merely connecting through Middle Eastern hubs may face delays, missed connections or unexpected overnight stays. (Reuters)

There is also a heightened risk around government buildings, diplomatic facilities, military sites, energy infrastructure, airports and large public gatherings. Travelers may encounter increased security checks, transport restrictions, temporary curfews or instructions to shelter indoors. The US State Department has advised travelers in the region to exercise heightened vigilance and prepare for cancellations, airspace closures and unforeseen escalation. (Utrikesdepartementet)

The wildfire report itself adds a separate environmental concern: the frequency and intensity of wildfires are increasing in parts of the Middle East and Africa. Travelers may therefore also face smoke, poor air quality, road closures and evacuation orders, particularly during periods of extreme heat and dry weather.

Five essential pieces of advice

  • Check official travel advice immediately before departure and throughout your stay. Review every destination and transit country, as warnings and entry conditions can change quickly.

  • Confirm flights directly with the airline before leaving for the airport. Allow generous connection times and have a backup route that avoids potentially affected airspace or hubs.

  • Stay away from military sites, diplomatic facilities, energy infrastructure and demonstrations. Do not photograph security operations, military equipment or damaged infrastructure.

  • Know what to do during an alert. If sirens sound or authorities issue a warning, go indoors, stay away from windows and follow local shelter or evacuation instructions without delay.

  • Prepare for disruption. Keep your passport, medication, charged power bank, water, emergency contacts and several days of essential supplies readily accessible, and make sure your travel insurance remains valid for the destination.
